This morning the Spirit of God taught me about the origin of light, based on the meaning of John 1 vs 4. I had set out to read my Bible as usual, and I sincerely asked Him to teach me something from His word, and He did! If you’re serious and intentional about knowing and understanding the message of the Bible, then you must always pray for insight and understanding before you even open your Bible to read.
This is because the Holy Spirit is the source of biblical inspiration. in other words, the scriptures came from Him:
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
2 Peter 1:19-21
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Like I said earlier, He taught me about the origin of light, in a way that I didn’t know before now. Now, the passage that I was reading was John 1.
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
When I got to the phrase “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men…”, the Holy Spirit said, “This is the same light which God commanded to shine in the beginning, according to Genesis 1:
Genesis 1:1-5
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
The Holy Spirit said, “This light is the light of Christ”. Now, I was blown away. Come to think of it: without light on Earth, no life will survive on Earth.
Once, some unbelieving trolls on Facebook put up a post asking why the Bible said that God created the sun on the fourth day, asking where the light came from which existed before the sun was created. They accused the bible of contradicting itself. How ignorant!
From what the Holy Spirit said to me, that light is the light of Christ. The sun was created as a symbol or type of the light of Christ. The light of Christ dispelled the darkness, according to John 1:5, even before the sun was created. The sun was only created to rule the Day (Gen. 1:16). The sun is not the Day, the light of Christ is the Day.
Think about this: light gives life. It is the light of the sun which gives life to earth and also sustains it. The Earth is just at the right spot in the solar system to sustain life. If it were any closer to the sun, the light would be too much, if it were a bit farther from the sun, it would be insufficient to sustain life!
Other planets have light from the sun, but it is either too much (Mercury, Venus), or too little (Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter). Plants depend on light to manufacture food. The amount of light they receive from the sun is finely tuned; it is just the right amount, in the absence of other factors such as cloud cover and climate zones.
Ancient cultures worshipped the sun because it was seen as the giver of life on earth. The Egyptians had Ra, the Greeks had Helios and Apollo, the Hindus had Surya, the Aztecs had Tonatiuh, the Incas had Inti, the Norse had Sol, the Celts had Lugh, and the Persians had Mithra.
These deities were worshipped and revered often with human sacrifices – remember the movie Apocalypto, where they sacrificed a victim by ripping out the heart of the person on the sacrificial altar? They believed so much in the power of the sun that they were willing to offer a living human to it, to appease it!
This tells you something about light – no one will live on earth without it. Human civilization would have gone into oblivion. John said in his gospel, “the light was the life of men”. It is the light of Christ that sustains every man on earth, whether atheist, agnostic, apostate, believer, religious, or irreligious. That’s how good God is.
The Bible tells us that all things were made through Jesus (Col. 1:16, John 1:3). In other words, Jesus is the creator!
Today, do you have the light of Christ in your heart? This is what sets you apart from every other person. The light of Jesus is shining in the world, and this gives life to everyone in the world. Beyond this, you also need His light shining in your heart.
2 Peter 1:19
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
Ephesians 5:14
Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”
The light of Christ in your heart will ensure that you enjoy fellowship with Him because without fellowship with Christ, you have no place in His Kingdom which is coming on the earth. A day will come when Jesus will rule from Jerusalem in Israel, over all the earth. This is known as the Millennial Reign of Christ. After that, there will be a new Earth where righteousness dwells forever (2 Peter 3:13).
Will you be there? Will you be among those who will inherit His eternal Kingdom?
You need the light of Christ in your heart. It will drive away every darkness in your heart and in your life. Are you oppressed by demons? Are you bound by addictions such as pornography, masturbation, smoking, drinking, womanizing, gambling, betting, horoscopy, and similar addictions? The light of Christ will surely drive away every darkness in you, and set you free!
Let us pray.
Father in Heaven, I receive the light of Christ in my heart today. I repent of my unbelief and embrace your grace and your truth. I open up my heart to you Lord, to make my heart your throne. I submit to your Lordship over my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
